Episode 1 (& 2?): LA X

This is how I spent my Lost hiatus...

growing this rad season three finale Jack beard... it's the best I could do.

This was a pretty interesting episode. So Juliet detonating the bomb did work... or did it. Impossible to tell. I'll reserve too much judgment on the alternate timeline until I see where they take but for now it seems like a quirky, nostalgic way to see old characters and how ALL their lives would've been different. It's neat... but I'm not sure how impactful it will be to the entire story... I'm sure it will be though.

A few interesting things I did see from the alternate timeline:

-When we first saw Jack he almost had a look on his face like he knew something was... off. Also, what's with the bloody neck that he doesn't seem to know anything about.

- So the island is underwater now? Hmmm...

- What happened to Desmond? Did he just go back to his original seat? Seemed like there might be more to it.

- Why woulld Hurley's luck have changed, and how'd he win the lottery.

- Look's like Sawyer is gonna try and con Hurley.

- Something must be up with Christian's casket being missing... might lead to why their in this alternate timeline.

- And finally... I can only assume that THIS timeline is what Juliet was referring to when she wanted to tell James, "It worked". Question is how did she know that?

Ok... so on the island... back to normal time... or as normal as we're gonna get. A few things I noticed or ... whatever:

- First off, how'd they warp back to present day?

- I was actually a little bummed by the Sawyer/Juliet scene. Kind of ruined the finale scene from last year.

- Jacob had a plan for Hurley all along.

- Hurley gets 'em in with the Others @ the Temple. Maybe now we'll finally get soem more info on what the Others TRUE purpose is. Would also like to know how they convert people, like Cindy.

- Looks like the pool is dirty (probably cuz Jacob is dead) and it didn't heal the Asian bearded dude's hand... but it did ultimately save Sayid... right? Might have something to do with Jacob's touch. (also pretty sure this is where they saved Ben).

And on the other (no pun intended) side of the island:

- The Man in Black is the Smoke Monster, and it looks like the ash circles are to keep him out. Which makes me wonder even more about who broke the circle that gave him access to the cabin. (definitely leaning towards the MiB being the one who said "Heeelp Me" to Locke the first time we went there)

- Richard knows who he is... and MiB/Locke knows who Richard is... "Nice to see you out of those chains!" I'll bet Richard was a slave on the Black Rock.

That's really all I've got for now. We'll see where the alternate timeline goes... I've got faith.

What did you, the millions and millions of people who read this think?

  1. After sleeping on it... just to clarify... things I think they dropped that were the most important about the other timeline:

    - Christian is missing
    - Juliet somehow knew something

Also... I noticed that the Others had...well... other kids running around inside the temple. Not just Emma and her brother. Where'd they come from?!?!

  2. One last thing... didn't get too into the HUGE reveal of the Man in Black being Locke and the smoke monster... I guess cuz I figured that was going to happen anyway.

  3. Did Juliet maybe know something because it may have happened before??

So I guess we can assume that Jacob was protecting Richard this whole time. I think that maybe Richard will age now. Richard, MIB nor Jacob have aged a bit. MIB is not a fan or Richard for a reason we will hopefully soon find out. MIB might do some crazy Renee (crazier version of JB from 24) torturing to Richard.

I like how the dude playing Locke lost the hopeful, glass half full look Locke used to always have. He just looks evil now.

The village being underwater, well it is just freaky.

Sawyer has nothing to live for anymore. He is going to do some crazy sh*t.

  4. Is it possible that the whole reason that Christian (actually Blackie) took Claire with him was to get him into the cabin? That would make sense right? Or was he in there before taking Claire?

I totally agree with the Sawyer/Juilet scene, it was pretty redundant. I guess they included it just so she could say, "It worked."

I found it a tad bit interesting that when Kate found the rest of the crew unconscious at the beginning she went to wake Jack up first instead of Sawyer.

I'm not a fan of the new Others. Asian guy pisses me off, and what's with the way that the 2nd in command (Sol Star from Deadwood) holds his hands in his vest pockets? Very annoying.

The piece of paper was a list with their names on it right? Or is that too obvious to bring up?

Lastly: pretty lame CGI in the underwater island reveal.

  5. NO clue on the Juliet stuff yet... it's very intriguing (sp?)

I'm still debating on whether or not Christian is on Jacob's side or MiB's. But your point about Claire possibly breaking the circle is well made! But I think he was in there before and he was the one who said "Heeeelp Meee' to John Locke the first time we saw the cabin.

ANd yeah, I took that as another one of Jacob's lists.

My biggest problems with the new others we just met are their costumes. They look lame.

How the hell did Kate end up in the tree anyway?!?

  6. Nothing really to add other then how cool was it that the Best Buy commercial had Lamar from Lynnwood in it. Telling us how awesome HDTV is. That guy is the coolest.

  7. Hated the Juliet/Sawyer biz...totally cheapened the scene from last year's finale.

    Kate in the tree...WTF? Seriously...interesting.

Others costumes...some were Brady Bunch looking, some were Seven Samurai looking...all were really cheesy.

Jack definitely seemed unsettled on the plane...that was my first thought was that he was on the plane but had the memories of the crash, Island etc...we'll see where they're going with that. Could it be that no matter what happens you cross paths with who your supposed to cross paths with? Regardless of the plane crash that they will all somehow end up on the Island anyway?

If I'm stating the obvious forgive me...I haven't worked in over a year and the transition back to a cubicle has been difficult...totally throwing me off my game.

  8. As always, thanks for the recap, Finn!

I think that the new "reset" timeline is for real; it "worked," as Juliet put it...still not sure how she'd know that. They were able to affect the future (since they were in the 1970s at the time) and stop the plane from crashing. However, they weren't able to change their past (everything we've already seen up to this point on the show). Hence, they now have two timelines or two versions of themselves.

This explains some of Hurley's "ghost" visions?...perhaps they're not ghosts or visions at all. When Hurley sees Charlie in the mental hospital, Charlie says "I am dead, but I'm also here."

Maybe Jack and the rest of the survivors of 815 will start to "remember" things as they move forward in a world where their plane didn't crash?

  9. Any theories on the people that are/aren't on the plane?

Shannon isn't. Boone's alive, but we never saw Michael or Walt for that matter. And why would Desmond be there? And apparently he and Jack had never met while running stairs at the stadium. Obviously some things had changed for everyone, but why? Why would stopping the plane from crashing change their lives before the flight? Answer this now please.

Sidenote: Any chance Locke didn't tell Boone he was handicapped because he was trying to flirt with him?

  10. Amanda - Yep on Jack, like I said you could tell he thought something was off. Kate in the tree was weird, it shot her up there but everyone else stayed where they were... sort of. I'll be it was jsut the writer's excuse to let Evangeline Lilly climb a tree again. And they better hope they don't have to go back to that island unless they're packing scuba gear.

Quinn - I like the ghost theory, only Jacob just straight out told Hurley he was dead and that was why he could see him. Totall agree on the memories coming back... a lot liek the Flashes Before Your Eyes ep with Desmond.

Erik - Little things have changed... the Butterfly effect if you willllll (say that like good ol' Dust'). Michael and Walt could have been on the plane... we didn't see EVERYONE (in actuality, they probably hadn't signed the actor's on for this ep yet). Desmond could have just happened to be on that flight... he never would have crashed on the sunken island. And Widmore probably sank on the island as well, which means he (gulp) may have never met Penny (may never have been conceived) or even if Penny was around and they were together Widmore wouldn't be and his hatred of Desmond might not force him to go for the solo race around the world. My head is starting to hurt. Of course... I don't believe that... I think we'll get back to what Daniel Faraday said about Desmond... the rules don't apply to him. He'll be key.

As for the stairs meeting between Jack and Desmond... it still could have happened. It took Desmond awhile originally to rememer Jack anyway, and Jack did somehow recognize Desmond. I'm hoping it's more of the alternate memories coming back and just not being able to place him as the dude who taped his ankle.

    Whew.

  11. B or S Fortune, I noticed the Best Buy guy as well. I was thinking about going to the Lynnhood Best Buy store to see if he actually worked there.

    Quinn, great observations! Wow!

Erik, Boone's good looks could turn a straight man gay! i wanna believe Desmond is back with his wife and his son Charlie. We didn't see SHannon but Boone did say he picked her up and there is an empty seat between Boone and Locke. Maybe she was in first class. I dunno...

  12. Oh and Erik, the CGI was insulting!

  13. Boone said he couldn't convince Shannon to leave Australia. So she's still back there.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Or in other words... the producers coudln't get her to come back to the show.

  15. Maggie Grace (Shannon)not wanting to come back to the show is about as bad of a decision as Angelina leaving the Jersey Shore. What the hell are you thinking. You got something better to do? Hey Shannon, I hope the movie you are filming with The Rock makes you a ton of money. The Best Buy guy does work there. I think he is a year older than us, he went to Cascade High and to WSU for a while. I am done obsessing about the Best Buy guy who almost convinced me to get a receiver with a Blu-Ray player in it.

Maybe I missed it but did we see Claire on the plane? Or just in the Taxi? This could open to door for other characters we didnt see on the plane, being in the alternate timeline. Or we saw her and I was too busy thinking about the best buy commercial, and now I just sound like an idiot.

  16. Pete and I just saw him at the Lynnwood store on Sunday... pretty bizzarre. And, no we didn't see her, so excellent point, there were tons of people we didn't see on the plane, so who knows who else was and was not there.

  17. Any chance that the "staged" plane crash was actually not staged? With the island being underwater in an alternate universe?

    ReplyDelete
  18. It's a cool theory, but Widmore told Faraday he was responsible for putting the plane on the ocean floor.

  19. But your idea would have been better

  20. To answer one of your questions above, maybe Hurley's luck changed when he submitted his script for "The Empire Strikes Back" back in 1977. Miles, at the time, called it stupid, but maybe that's how Hurley struck it big. Guess that's a pretty big stretch but I just watched "Some like it Hoth" and that made me laugh.

Good wrap up Finn. I completely agree about the Sawyer/Juliet thing. Not sure why they brought that all up and thought it was a little too dramatic, but guess Juliet had something important to say. I feel like Jack's getting a bad rap from Sawyer.

Definitely stoked to see what's in store for next week! Hopefully new outfits for the new others too!
