Episode 9: Ab Aeterno

WHOOOOOAAAAAAA.... WE'RE HALF WAY THEEEEEERE!!!

Seriously, half the season is over.

Well this was a very revealing episode... but I don't have a ton to add.

Huge reveals. Richard was a prisoner on the Black Rock and it was launched into the statue and shattered it. (Pretty crummy explanation, but I'll take it. I guess Jacob conjured up a HUGE storm). The island is a place to contain the evil that is Smokey (if we believe Jacob).

Richard acts as Jacob's mouthpiece.

And thanks to Hurley (and Isabella) it would appear that his crisis of faith is over.

Don't think I'm dismissing this ep, I thought it was great... but what we learned is pretty clear cut. And what we still don't know... Who to trust? What's Smokey's name? etc. is still up in the air.

Couple of things that I noted:

- Captain Hanso.... always figured that was how Alvar Hanso and Dharma intially found the island, but they all got wiped out in the crash so.... also... how the hell did the ship's log make it off the island? (the one Widmore was bidding on back in the Constant)

- The knife is back. Special knife.

- Why do the Others kill? If Richard is speaking for Jacob... why does Jacob get involved? I thought he was hands off? Or maybe it;'s just the leaders who make the call and Richard has to follow their lead. How'd they start anyway? Jacob told him to?

Questions like those can go on and on and I've formulated a number of answers, but not sure anyone cares. Let's see if we can get a dialogue going on this thread, and if not... well i'll keep it to myself.

Also, one of you Bibley people want to chime in about the wine? Who give who wine in the Bible to pass the time? anyone?

Next week's looks like a Sun and Jin episode. Going down the home stretch.

Anyway, what did you all think?

  1. I was confused with Isabella's ghost. Up until now the only ghosts that showed up on the island have been people whose dead bodies have been there right? Ok, so maybe Hurley can talk to anyone, anywhere, but that doesn't explain how she showed up in The Black Rock back in 1857. It would have to be Smokey, but up until now he's only been able to become island corpses like I mentioned above. That bothered me.

As for the ship's logs, I suppose Richard could have taken that back to the mainland at some point. Why he would do that doesn't make a lot of sense, but oh well.

Like you said, this episode made it seem more like Jacob's job is to keep Smokey on the island forever so that he can't unleash evil upon the world. And I guess in the mean time try to convince him that there's hope for humanity. This reminded me of a Twilight Zone episode called The Howling Man in which a group of monks have Satan trapped in a cell. Here's a link to that ep's synopsis:

Now my main question is, why did Jacob need a replacement? Did he just want to retire? Or did he believe that Smokey would eventually try to kill him and he'd need a back-up?

  2. Good stuff Erik, I will definitely try and watch the Howling Man? Do youhave it at the Huckleberry house?

I wouldn't worry too much about Hurley... mayeb he can talk to any dead people... it's just the only ones we saw were people who died on the island because... how much would we care about peopel we'd never scene before, right?

And as far as Smokey changing into Isabella, I just think he can change into anything he wants, but maybe it needs to be dead.... he just needs to scan your memories first (which he did to Alpert) and then he can do it.

Your last comment in great. Why did Jacob need the replacement? Maybe he wants to leave the island just like Smokey. Maybe he JAcob isn't so perfect POP!

I know I said it earlier, but it woudl be nice to get some Others history about how the leader is selected (by Jacob?) and why they take some and kill others? Is it decided by the leader or Jacob? And if it's Jacob... isn't that the interfering that he didn't want to do?

Doubt we'll see any of that though.

  3. Yeah, I guess the scanning memories thing makes sense. I'm satisfied with that. Not sure if I have that ep at home. I have like 25 eps on DVD, but they're in no particular order, so I guess there's like a 1 in 10 chance it's on one of 'em.

  6. I thought this was a fantastic episode and revealed so much! Since I'm not as good with all the names/past events, etc this really helped. I just have a few questions:

In Season 5, MIB and Jacob were watching Richard's ship come in and MIB made the comment that Jacob was bringing this ship to the island. I'm curious as to why? (And maybe that's what you're asking above). Did Jacob always want Richard to come to the island or was it everyone on the ship? Was the lighthouse built at this point and that's always been there to guide people to the island?

I thought Richard (or rather the actor that plays Richard) did a fantastic job in this episode. In all the previous seasons, he always seemed like he had all the answers and was so serious. It was nice to see him break down and have some true emotion. The boat crashing into the statue and the statue breaking apart was disappointing. You're telling me a wooden boat broke apart that big thing??

As for the wine and the bible....I can't think of someone that gave it out for the heck of it or to pass time, but as we all know from communion that it does represent the blood of christ and how he shed this blood to save all who have sinned. (Thank you Lutheran Sunday School). So maybe it has to do with Good vs Evil/ God vs Devil?

  7. Kaaaaaate... nice!

Yeah, the season 5 finale we saw a boat coming to the island, and the statue was intact. Could have been the Black Rock, but probably not, since the weather was so different. So if it was before the Black Rock I guess it was just another group of lucky fools that Jacob brought to the island (some supernatural way, doubt we'll ever get an explanation) and now, like Jacob said, they're all dead.

And yeah, a GIANT WAVE (created by Jacob?) and a wooden boat smashed the statue? Not to mention launched the Black Rock to the middle of the island? Pretty hard to believe... but then again... pretty hard to believe that the island can skip through time... and frankly pretty hard to believe anyone survived the intialy plane crash to begin with. I think we'll just have to roll with this one.

  8. Still not the most unlikely plotline. That goes to Hurley being able to attract a hot piece like Libby.

  9. In her defense, she WAS bat shit crazy... at least until Michael shot her guts full of lead.

  10. So maybe you have an answer for this Finn.... If Jacob maintained the same form until Ben killed him, why didn't the MIB? Is his shape changing strictly for manipulation? Or was it a necessity? He was open with the fact that he was not actually John Locke so the manipulation reason is kind of out....hmmmmm

    ReplyDelete
  11. Well, I'm not sure we've seen any indication that Jacob CAN change shape, so maybe it wasn't an option. Good thought though.

As for MIB, yeah I think he uses it for manipulation.

And he hasn't told EVERYONE he isn't John Locke. But I guess the Others probably know since the ones that came back form the beack, probably told them
